Show Review: Shotgun Showdown, The Cartographers at Que Sera
Duo, The Cartographers, opened with a solid set of electronic-fused dream pop. Great melodies and harmonies, nice sequencing and programmed drums beats textured with the organic warmth of guitars and voice. Really nice stuff.
Shotgun Showdown was next with their great indie post-punk pop. Channeling the grit and angst of such forbearers like Scrawl, and Pylon, there is a cathartic edge, melancholy and desperation to their sound that I absolutely love. The great interplay between bass and guitar compliment the lead vocalist's, Tomara, great voice. Her voice comes out natural and in ernest. The song, "Mummy", adds an accordion that gives a great haunting quality to that song. Would love to see more songs with the accordion. I'm really impressed with their EP. The production has a sparse punchiness a la Steve Albini, that fits their sound well.
Shotgun Showdown are a band to watch. You can catch them again this Friday at Viento Y Agua doing an acoustic set, then next Tuesday at Costa Mesa's fab Detroit Bar.
